Stay Plan (and Sheltering-in-Place)
For these types of emergencies, staying in your home is the best plan:
- Animal disease outbreak
- Chemical incident (will depend on type of incident)
- Explosion (will depend on type of incident)
- Human disease outbreak
- Terrorist attack (will depend on type of attack)
- Utility breakdown
- Weapons incident (will depend on type of incident)
- Weather (will depend on type of weather and shelter you are in)
As a result of some of these emergencies, the outside air may not be safe to breath. This is true when there's an explosion and lots of debris is in the air, or if there are diseases that are contagious, such as a human or animal disease outbreak.
In these situations, public safety officials will instruct you to "shelter-in-place." This means that you should be prepared to protect yourself and others by creating barriers between you and the outside air. That way you can breathe in clean air.
