Get Prepared

Water

Getting enough water every day prevents dehydration and is vital to good health. Use the general guideline of storing one gallon of water for each household member per day for drinking and personal care. Some household members may need more water, such as children, nursing mothers and sick individuals. If you live in a warm weather climate, more water may also be necessary.

Here are some other water tips:
  • Keep at least a 3-day supply of water for each household member.
  • Buy water for your kit in small individual containers (1 pint or less) or store tap water in clean plastic containers (such as soft drink bottles).
  • If you know an emergency situation is imminent and you have time, fill as many containers as you can with water, including bathtubs.
  • If water supplies run low, do not ration water. Drink what you need today, then find more tomorrow.
